Melody Slot Machine is an application developed by RIKEN with the purpose of integrating music and AI. This innovative app allows users to create unique melodies by rearranging melody variations using slot dials. The composer can compose different variations of a melody, and the structure of the melody is analyzed using a theory of music known as generative theory of tonal music (GTTM). The beauty of Melody Slot Machine is that even if the melody switches to another variation in the middle, the structure remains intact, providing endless possibilities for composition.

• Dial operation: Users can rotate the dials, similar to a slot machine, to select a melody from multiple variations. As the performance progresses, the dial scrolls to the left, and the leftmost dial on the screen represents the score of the currently playing performance.
• Grid tile operation: The horizontal grid tiles below the dials display the changes made to the dials throughout the song. Users can swipe up to expand and utilize the elongated grid tile.
• Melody shuffle: By shaking their iPhones, users can have all the dials rotate simultaneously, mimicking the experience of pulling the lever on a slot machine to uncover a random combination.
• Song selection / Part switching: Users can easily select a song by pressing the musical note button. For songs with multiple parts, they can use this button to switch between different parts.

The Music Information Intelligence Team, a division of RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project, is dedicated to exploring innovative ways of creating and experiencing music through AI. Melody Slot Machine showcases the cutting-edge advancements in music production and consumption, as AI automatically analyzes the structure of a melody and generates new melodies based on the obtained structure. This application aims to support composers working on projects that require numerous variations, such as movies and games.
